Throwback Thursday Stories: Mean, Green, Soccer-Playing Machine

Today we are participating in The Mom Creative's Throwback Thursday Stories! Every Thursday she posts a throwback picture and tells the story behind it, and then has a link-up at the bottom of the post for others to share their stories too! If you enjoy today's post and would like to see more, feel free to click over to her post and check out more stories by clicking here. If you are a new reader from The Mom Creative, welcome! Feel free to click around, we are glad you're here.   :)

My older brother was an awesome soccer player. He wound up getting a scholarship because of his athletic ability, so naturally, when I was a little girl my parents enrolled me in the local recreation department's soccer program. My nephew and little brother were both enrolled in the same team as me, so we had tons of fun doing soccer-things together.....like daring each other to eat grass and throwing dirt at each other (the grass tasted weird, if you were wondering.)

I am relatively certain that for the first two seasons I did nothing but dance in circles, pick flowers and sing throughout every practice and game. I seem to remember my Dad lovingly shouting across the field: "Sarah, put down the flower and kick the ball." I am almost positive that I did not listen to him. Because flowers.

Due to my amazing soccer/dancing abilities, my parents also enrolled me in ballet.....where I pretended to crawl on the floor like a lion anytime they played a Lion King song. *ahem*

Eventually I did get serious about playing soccer though. Maybe a little too serious.

I want you all to know that my mom has both of these pictures on her fridge. It never fails, anytime we have a large gathering at her house someone has to bring up my face in this picture.

Listen guys, the photographer told me to look like a mean, green, soccer-playing machine. So I was a good little girl and did exactly what he told me. I'm good at following orders!  ;)  That phrase also caught on really well too, so I repeated probably a million times that I was a mean, green, soccer-playing machine over the rest of the season.

But in all seriousness, my childhood soccer teams hold some of my best memories. It was so awesome to play on a team with both my nephew and my little brother. My Dad and older brother even volunteered as coaches one year, which was awesome. As I grew up and continued playing I discovered my love of running, which led me to my extensive running career throughout middle school and high school. So Dad, I suppose all the money you paid so I could dance and pick flowers on the soccer field was worth it!  ;)

And for the record, I still consider myself a mean, green, soccer-playing machine. I just don't wear the pigtails anymore.  :)

Throwback Thursday: Dance Parrttaaaaayy!!

I now introduce to you Thursday Throwback. A lot of my friends on Facebook do a “throwback” by posting a picture of themselves from their childhood—whether it’s funny or just plain cute. So in an effort to be a complete copycat, I’m bringing the Thursday Throwback to Life with the Casterlines. Shablam.

Our first real Thursday Throwback was this post that I wrote back in March about Roman's second-grade writings. But there were no pictures in that one…..so maybe it doesn’t count after all. And it was written on a Friday, so that’s two strikes against it. Ahem.
Anyways, did you know that I used to take clogging when I was little? No, you didn’t. Because there's only a handful of people who knew that, but now you do. I was actually getting pretty good at it, and I did it for around five-ish years. But then we moved and couldn’t find a good dance studio in the new town, so that was the end of that. But for five long years I danced around my parent’s kitchen in my clogs and scuffed up the linoleum floors and drove everyone half-crazy. Here’s an adorable picture of me at one of my first dance recitals. I was either five or six years old when this was taken. Am I not the cutest thing ever???!?!!?! (Just nod in agreement.)

So there ya have it folks. If you’re lucky I might show you a few of my awesome dance moves. MAYBE.
“Let them praise His name with dancing, making melody to Him with tambourine and lyre.” ~Psalm 149:3

Second Grade Throwback

So a few days ago, Roman's mom found some of Roman's papers he wrote from Second Grade. They were *ahem* precious, so I decided to share them with you. But I can't just share them and keep my opinions to myself. *wink* So let's travel back in time and explore my husband's second grade mind....my comments will be in italics.  :)

On School...

If I had my own school, I would be the prinsubul. I would inerdus myself. I would get to know all the children. I will know the teachers, too. I would walk aroud the school.

Because, you, that is all the "prinsubuls" do anyways.

How was your weekend?

This weekend I

Interesting.

Popularity....

What can I do to make my friends and teachers like me more? I can be more nicer to them. Be quiet in class. I will do better whan I'm doing my work.

Apparently, Mr. Roman had an issue with being quiet in class. His words, not mine.

I have a dream....

I have a bream that one day this natin will be very clean, and the pepole in the world will cuiut puluetin the world. I have a Second dream, that every person in the world will do there best. I have a Third dream evrey dity will be my frind. I have a drieam that evrey baby will be bron. I have a dream that every person in the hole world will be clean.

Pretty good dreams there. Kinda makes me wonder how many of his classmates didn't smell good though??

Popularity Revisited.

I will have to play with them a lot and they might be my friends. I would like to have more friends. I would halp them sound out words. If they can't read and I will help them because I love helping my friends read.

Perhaps you should learn to spell first?

Interesting.

If my bed turned into a boat I would

We think he panicked at the idea of his bed turning into a boat, so he just stopped writing this one.

Anger Management.

When I get mad I'm angry.

True story.

"Light Makers"

Light comes from meny things. The sun makes it own light. It is a giant ball of fire. The sun is a bright light. A candle makes its own light. It is not a bright light. It's a bim light. We do not see the sun's light at night. How do we see at night? We see with light bulbs.

A scientist in the making....

So there ya have it folks. We had tons of fun reading through his notebook of writings and old school pictures. It's always fun to go back and find hidden treasures like that.

And oh by the way, happy Friday folks!!

"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret-it leads only to evil. For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land."  ~Psalm 37:8-9
